THE MET SPEAKS
Annual Distinguished Lecture on the Arts of South and Southeast Asia
Friday, March 20, 6–7 pm. Location
The Met Fifth Avenue, NYC. Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium.
In Calcutta, the cosmopolitan colonial capital of 19th-century India, artists and artisans adapted new technologies of mechanical reproduction to render the Hindu gods more accessible and affordable. During this time, they pioneered the chromolithographic religious print, a form of popular devotional imagery that became ubiquitous in 20th-century India. This lecture explores how this new genre emerged and proliferated into the pervasive visual language of modern India.
Presented in conjunction with the exhibition Household Gods: Hindu Devotional Prints, 1860–1930.
This lecture is made possible by the generous support of Jeff Soref and Paul Lombardi.

FOR WANT OF A HORSE the world premiere of a darkly comic, deeply human exploration of love, desire and unconventional relationships. Written by trans playwright, screenwriter and comic book writer Olivia Dufault.
Directed by Echo associate artistic director Elana Luo.
Joey Stromberg stars as Calvin. Calvin is devoted to his wife, Bonnie, played by Jenny Soo. But, as Joey confesses to his best friend, PJ (Steven Culp, if he’s to move forward, he needs to open up their relationship to include his new romantic partner. One complication: that partner would be Q-Tip played by Griffin Kelly— and Q-Tip is a horse.
The play’s unusual subject matter was inspired by an unlikely 2014 New York magazine article titled “What It’s Like to Date a Horse,” part of the magazine’s “What It’s Like” series of in-depth interviews with people who lead atypical lives.
Dufault was awarded a Venturous Playwrights Fellowship for the play’s bold subject matter, Dufault has been working with the Echo Theatre Company to develop For Want of a Horse since 2023.
“For Want of a Horse is one of the funniest, strangest and most original plays I’ve read in a long time,” says Echo artistic director Chris Fields. “The Echo exists to champion plays that challenge conventions and move audiences in unfamiliar ways, and Olivia Dufault’s fearless voice is exactly the kind of work we love to produce.”
The creative team for For Want of a Horse includes scenic designer Alex Mollo, lighting designer Matthew Richter, sound designer Alysha Grace Bermudez, and costume designer Leah Morrison. The production stage manager is Bianca Rickheim. Eve Gordon and Meghan McEnery are associate producers. Chris Fields and Marie Bland produce for the Echo Theater Company.
Founded in 1997, the Echo Theater Company has gained a reputation for producing and developing exciting new work. Under Fields’ artistic leadership, the company has championed playwrights for a quarter century, producing and commissioning numerous world premieres and introducing Los Angeles to playwrights David Lindsay-Abaire, Adam Rapp and Sarah Ruhl among others.
For Want of a Horse opens April 18 for a six-week run, through May 25, at Atwater Village Theatre.
Atwater Village Theatre is located at 3269 Casitas Ave in Los Angeles, CA.
ULSTER AMERICAN by David Itrland.
Directed by Ciarán O'Reilly.
Starring Tony Award winner Max Baker, Matthew Broderick, and Geraldine Hughes.
On the evening before rehearsals begin for her new work, Ulster-born playwright Ruth Davenport (Geraldine Hughes) visits the home of English director Leigh Carver (Max Baker), along with Oscar-winning Hollywood star Jay Conway (Matthew Broderick) who has just arrived in London to star in the world premiere. What begins as a cordial gathering to discuss the upcoming production quickly descends into a brutal psychological brawl as egos, ideologies, and historical baggage collide. A theatrical hand grenade disguised as a drawing-room comedy, Ulster American explosively reveals some raw contradictions at the heart of modern storytelling and political posturing.
In 2018, Ulster American was produced at the Traverse Theatre as part of the Edinburgh Fringe. It won a Scotsman Fringe First and the Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best New Play. Ulster American was revived by Second Half Productions at the Riverside Studios, London in 2023 featuring Woody Harrelson, Andy Serkis and Louisa Harland.
Ulster American will feature set design by Charlie Corcoran, costume design by Orla Long lighting design by Michael Gottlieb, original music and sound by Ryan Rumery, sound design by Florian Staab, and properties by Deirdre Brennan. Karen Evanouskas is the Production Stage Manager and Jade Doina is the Assistant Stage Manager.
Previews of Ulster American begin on the Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage at Irish Repertory Theatre, New York, with opening night set for Sunday March 15, for a limited run through Sunday May 10, 2026.

follow the actions of a man on the edge. Dog Day Afternoons a raw, gritty reminder of what happens when

DID YOU CHANCE YOUR PHONE FOR THE END OF THE WORLD written and directed by Fletcher Michae.
The year is 2034. A city-demolishing asteroid is heading straight for Brooklyn. Rather than alerting the public to the impending catastrophe, the government delays the announcement until a boutique advertising agency can devise a suitably “positive” rebrand for the calamitous space rock. In a culture obsessed with optics, messaging, and spin, did you charge your phone for the end of the world? skewers the absurdity of image management in the face of existential threat, blending sharp satire with Infinite Monkey’s signature absurdist edge.
The cast features Lucy Boisvert, Collin Dennis, and Fletcher Michael.
Part of the 2026 New York City Fringe Festival with FRIGID New York. The production will run at The Wild Project, 195 East 3rd Street.

IRIS CANTOR
nationally respected philanthropist, women's healthcare advocate and champion of the arts, died on February 22, 2026 in Palm Beach, FL. She was 95.
As Chairman of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation, Mrs. Cantor nurtured the Cantor legacy in the visual arts, with a primary focus on the work of French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) and his contemporaries. Equally passionate in support of women's health, she also was instrumental in furthering gender-targeted healthcare and research at major medical and academic institutions on both coasts.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Mrs. Cantor launched her career by joining a brokerage firm on Wall Street - then an avenue few women pursued. Through her professional activities she met her future husband, B. Gerald Cantor (1916-1996), founder of the securities brokerage Cantor Fitzgerald, Inc. A pacesetter in the financial arena, Bernie Cantor also was the world's leading private collector of works by Rodin. The Cantors collaborated in organizing exhibitions, promoting scholarship on Rodin and donating artworks to museums and universities across the United States and around the world. They established the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Foundation in 1978 to fund medical, educational and cultural institutions and programs in the United States and abroad.
In the ensuing years, the Foundation has sent traveling exhibitions of the Cantors' beloved Rodin sculpture to cultural institutions throughout the country and beyond, reaching over 12 million people. In addition, their landmark gifts of sculpture have established or augmented Rodin collections at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, College of the Holy Cross, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of Art and Stanford University. Another significant beneficiary is the Musée Rodin in France, where Mrs. Cantor was inspired to executive-produce the nationally acclaimed and award winning film documenting the first lost-wax casting of Rodin's monumental work, The Gates of Hell.
"Her legacy is one of imagination, conviction, and unwavering belief in the essential role museums play-not only in what they show, but also in what they help us understand about ourselves and the world around us," said Max Hollein, director and CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
After her husband's death in 1996, Mrs. Cantor continued to lead their foundation in supporting projects and programs consistent with their shared vision of furthering
scholarship on Rodin and making the sculptor's works accessible to the public. Other significant donations have expanded teaching and performance facilities at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, including a new film center and the university's first professional proscenium theater.
Iris Cantor was predeceased by her husband Bernie, her mother Faye, and her sisters Binnie and Enid. She is survived by her nieces Randi Aitken, Suzanne Fisher, Michele Geller, Monica Muhart, great-nephew Ryan Fisher, and many other loving nieces and nephews as well as family friend John Desiderio.
CAROL QUESTROM public relations expert died December 22, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. She was 82 years old.
She worked with the Mayor of New York on the celebratory renaming of Seventh Avenue to Fashion Avenue, and organized transformative arts festivals for the City of Atlanta. Kelli also tapped into a deep-seated sense of civics by orchestrating major fundraisers for organizations working to end homelessness and fight AIDS, and underwrote educational initiatives in museums and universities across America.
Through it all, Kelli steadfastly supported the rising career of her husband of 58 years, Allen Questrom. In Kelli, Allen - an accomplished retail executive who served as CEO of Federated Department Stores, Neiman Marcus, Barneys New York and JCPenney - found the perfect partner. That was true both in the active life they shared together - with regular world travels, and ski trips and hikes in their beloved Aspen hills - and in their many business and civic activities.
"We love each other and are also close friends," Allen said in a 2016 interview the couple did with his alma mater, Boston University. "Kelli has been a sounding board to me, tells me all the things I do wrong, but at the same time why I'm such a terrific person!"
A college marketing professor, impressed with Kelli's natural abilities, suggested she explore the junior executive training program at Abraham & Strauss (A&S) in New York - at the time, a major division of the Federated Department Stores chain. That internship turned into a full-time job as director of youth marketing at A&S, where she produced fashion shows and wrote ads. And it was there, in the mid-1960s, that she met Allen - then a buyer for the company - in the A&S lunchroom.
In Atlanta (from 1978 to 1984), while Allen led the Rich's department stores, Kelli served as vice-president and creative director for Burton-Campbell, then the city's largest advertising agency, where she conceived and produced many of the city's most successful public events, including a high-profile concert and fundraising auction with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr. When the couple moved to Los Angeles in 1984 - thanks to Allen's new job as CEO and Chairman of the Bullock's department store - Kelli found herself a central figure in L.A.'s civic life. Among other initiatives, she co-founded the Greater Los Angeles Partnership for the Homeless, resulting in the establishment of L.A.'s Downtown Women's Center.
By the mid-1980s, Kelli had a scare with breast cancer - which inspired her to leave her PR career and turn full-time to civic engagements. In Dallas (where the couple moved in 1988, as Allen led the turnaround of Neiman Marcus), Kelli and Allen became big supporters of local cultural institutions such as the Dallas Museum of Art, where she served many years as a trustee. Kelli also took a particular interest in the charity Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) - serving on the inaugural DIFFA board in the 1990s, at the height of the pandemic.
br>
Allen would make several more moves - to lead Federated Stores through most of the 1990s, and then to Barneys later in the decade - before returning to Dallas to steer JCPenney's turnaround in 2000. After Allen's official retirement in 2005, the couple split their time between Dallas and Aspen. Among Kelli's proudest achievements was designing or restoring the 12 homes they shared over the years - including a Bauhaus structure previously owned by Motown's Berry Gordy, and a Hollywood Hills house, which Kelli renovated extensively, later purchased by Madonna.
The last two decades of their marriage were also marked by a growing commitment to philanthropy. In addition to her work with the Dallas Museum of Art, Kelli also served as a trustee of the Aspen Art Museum and the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Through the Allen and Kelli Questrom Foundation, the couple endowed educational programing at both museums, along with free guided tours for students at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
For Kelli, the passion for art education went back to her early days in New York, as a volunteer running educational children's programs at the Whitney. As she explained in announcing a 2012 gift to the Aspen Art Museum: "Art museums are essential environments for learning, equipped to teach not just painting and drawing but, more importantly, how to think creatively and to apply one's latent talent to any vocation or occupation."
That commitment to education was also evident in the couple's longstanding relationship with Boston University. Starting with a gift in 2007 to endow a deanship and professorship, followed by a 2010 gift to fund two more professorships, the Questroms made an historic $50-million gift in 2015 that led to the renaming of the Questrom School of Business. "This is a singular moment in the history of the school and the University," said then-president Robert A. Brown. "The Questroms have raised our sights on the impact of philanthropy at Boston University."
Kelli is survived by Allen, her sisters-in-law Judi Hernon and Alicia McHugh, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
